Microplastics are small plastic particles less than 5 millimetres in size. They are categorised into two main types: primary and secondary microplastics.

• Primary microplastics are manufactured to be small, such as microbeads found in cosmetics and cleaning products or plastic pellets used in industrial processes.
• Secondary microplastics result from the breakdown of larger plastic items, such as bottles, bags, and fishing nets, due to exposure to sunlight, waves, and weathering.

These tiny fragments are virtually impossible to remove from the environment once they’ve entered it. They’re not biodegradable, meaning they persist for decades, if not centuries, causing long-term harm to marine ecosystems and human health.

Recent studies have detected microplastics in human blood, lungs, and placentas, raising concerns about long-term health effects. While the full implications are still being studied, early research suggests links to inflammation, immune responses, and potential hormonal disruption. 

Cleaner Seas have scaled the patented technology used in our Indi domestic filter and created a professional range capable of tackling microfibre capture at much larger scales for commercial and industrial use. Most of our professional range uses the same technology, and all of our systems are return cartridge based.

All of our filters come with our Return + Recycle System included. Our filters all have a Capture Cartridge included which gets returned every 6 months for refurbishment. The microfibres are removed and recycled at our centre in the UK.

Yes, we work with global shipping partners that enable us to offer our Return + Recycle system just about anywhere in the world. We currently only have a Return + Recycle Centre in the UK but plan to expand this in the future to have more centres internationally as we grow.

No. This is a truly circular system. We believe that swapping ocean pollution for landfill doesn’t solve the microfibre problem. Therefore all our filter systems harness our Return + Recycle cartridges. These are sent back to CSG every 6 months for refurbishment and microfibre recycling.
